Under the guidance of Christian Brother Barnabas McDonald (1865-1929), the first Columbian Squires circle was instituted in 1925. Membership in the Squires is for Catholic boys between the ages of 10 and 17. Squires' activities are many, varying from spiritual to active service for the Church and community. Each circle elects officer members from their own rank, teaching skills of leadership and responsibility.

The purpose of the Squires is to promote the spiritual, cultural, civic, social and physical improvement of its members and the development of their leadership qualities so as to prepare Catholic young men to become leaders among their fellow citizens. In addition to the social structure, members will receive leadership training in four basic activities:

  • spiritual-planning and attending Squires & parents Masses, retreats, vocation related programs;
  • circle-promote brotherhood among members, plan activities, games, outings and promote the image of the Circle in the community;
  • membership-all members become involved in recruiting and retention thus making all members active members;
  • service-planning volunteer time such as planned food drives, fund raising events, community clean up, working with Knights of Columbus.
